How Often to Pump a Septic Tank

← Resources

General intervals and what affects them.

The EPA says most household septic tanks should be inspected every 3 years and pumped typically every 3–5 years. Household size, tank size, garbage disposal use and water use change that.

For aerobic systems, Oklahoma DEQ rules use sludge depth: the trash tank should be pumped so sludge never exceeds 40% of tank depth. Keep pumping receipts — they help when you sell.
