Aerobic System Maintenance and Oklahoma DEQ Rules

← Resources

What owners are responsible for.

Aerobic systems are common in central Oklahoma, where clay soils limit conventional lateral lines. Under Oklahoma DEQ rule OAC 252:641-10-3:

  • The installer must maintain a new aerobic system for two years at no extra cost, including repairs and testing every six months.
  • After two years, the owner is solely responsible for maintaining it or hiring a maintenance provider.
  • Spray systems need chlorine disinfection; keep tablets or liquid chlorine stocked.

Owner checklist

  • Don't ignore the alarm light — it usually means a failed aerator or high water.
  • Keep spray heads clear and away from where people gather.
  • Don't switch off the air compressor to save power.

If your installer isn't providing required maintenance, DEQ asks owners to call 1-800-522-0206.
